IntraLase is another word for bladeless or all-laser LASIK treatments. Instead of using a surgical tool known as a microkeratome to cut a flap in the cornea in order to administer treatment, IntraLase uses an infrared laser to create a precision cut. Patients who opt to undergo IntraLase do so for a variety of reasons, including unsuitability for traditional LASIK. Furthermore, there is some evidence which shows IntraLase may help reduce or prevent some of the more common side effects of LASIK surgery, such as eye infections.

The IntraLase technique is not much different than traditional LASIK. In fact, both procedures use an excimer laser to remove, or ablate, tissue from the cornea in order to reshape it. The primary difference between the two procedures is the introduction of infrared technology in IntraLase to create a smooth corneal flap to use as a bandage during the healing phase of the process.
