The normal shape of the eye is round, somewhat like a baseball. This allows light to enter though and hit a lens in the back of the eye. People with astigmatism, however, have oblong-shaped corneas, which causes light to hit two different points in the back of the eye. This can cause varying degrees of blurring, from mild to moderate, and many people with astigmatism are unaware they have it.

The proper course of treatment for the correction of astigmatism depends greatly on the type of astigmatism the patient has. When a patient has two light meridians no more than 180 degrees apart, he or she is considered to have regular astigmatism. However, if the light meridians are more than 180 degrees apart, irregular astigmatism is present. The method of correction will be different for both each type of astigmatism, as regular astigmatism responds very well to conventional treatments, while irregular astigmatism may require more in-depth procedures.
