The two most common laser vision correction procedures are LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). To perform LASIK, a skilled surgeon uses a microkeratome to create a very thin flap in the cornea, the thin outer layer of the eye. The surgeon then lifts this flap and uses an excimer laser to sculpt the sub-surface of the cornea. The procedure is rapid and involves the use of cool, ultraviolet light.

PRK laser vision correction is similar to LASIK. It also requires the use of an excimer laser, which removes tissue without the use of heat. However, PRK procedures don't involve the creation of a corneal flap to reach the cornea's sub-surface. Instead, PRK involves the complete removal of the cornea's outer layer. After the inner layer of the cornea is reshaped, the outer corneal layer is allowed to grow back (this takes from three to five days).
